This autumn, TERRA – a monumental international group exhibition – returns to Burgundy for its second iteration, bridging the worlds of art and wine in a site-specific showcase across France’s most prestigious wine region. Curated by Jenn Ellis of Apsara Studio and Art Historian Emie Diamond, and produced by Milena Berman of Hautes Côtes, TERRA will take place in the heart of Burgundy’s UNESCO World Heritage vineyards, featuring multidisciplinary works by 40+ leading and emerging artists, from Wolfgang Tillmans to Niamh O’Malley and Mia Chaplin. Set across historic locations typically inaccessible to visitors — including privately owned châteaux and hôtel particuliers —TERRA explores terroir, unpacking the relationships between art, place, and history.
The exhibition is curated in response to each space and its architecture, divided into thematic parts, each reflecting a different aspect of terroir. Visitors are invited on a sensory journey that celebrates the intersection of art, wine, and heritage, with works spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, and installation displayed across private spaces in and around the mediaeval town of Beaune. Building on the success of the 2023 inaugural edition, this year TERRA introduces two major new exhibition venues: Château de Chevigny en Valière, a Napoleonic-era estate with an ornate Italian-style theatre, and neo-classical 1780s Résidence de Moyne-Blandin, owned by 67 Pall Mall, which is yet to open to the public. TERRA offers a rare cultural experience and fosters a unique collaboration between international art and wine enthusiasts while engaging the local winemaking community to create a distinctive cultural proposition. The vernissage weekend will take place from 18-20 October, directly following the VIP opening of Art Basel Paris. The exhibition will remain open by appointment until 17 November, culminating with the 164th charity wine auction at Hospices de Beaune, hosted this year by Sotheby’s. Following the end of the exhibition in Burgundy, TERRA will tour to AORA, a virtual space combining art, architecture and music enabling audiences globally to discover the works.
