MOLLIS MACHINA
C. Lucy R. Whitehead
12th of September - 12th of October
Private View 12th of September 6-8pm
Soho Revue is proud to present “Mollis Machina” an exhibition of paintings by C. Lucy R. Whitehead. This new collection of paintings presents an exploration of the human body, framed as an object of systems and functions rather than a reflection of individual character or tool for socio-political dogma.
The title of the exhibition translates from Latin as ‘soft machine’ and serves to create a distance from personal associations and allowing the viewer to reflect on Lucy’s portrayal of the body as abstracted ‘parts’ allowing the viewer to perceive the body in its raw form. Throughout the works in the exhibition, Lucy aims to reduce the human figure to a singular object, emphasising its anatomical quirks and functional qualities while stripping away the societal, cultural, and emotional contexts that typically surround it.
Whitehead states: “my aim with this exhibition is to encourage a view of the human body devoid of its character and individuality. While it may seem nearly futile to abstract the body to such an extent, as observers and participants we inevitably seek the relatable and familiar. This instinct often brings to the surface the very spiritual aspects I aim to minimise, revealing the complexity of our relationship with the physical form.”
Each painting within the exhibition presents the human figure as if it were a specimen encased in a jar, existing in isolation without context or habitat. This confinement invites viewers to contemplate the surrounding space and context, prompting questions about the boundaries we impose upon ourselves and the systems that govern our existence.
