PRINT REVUE 2023-2024
24th of July
Private View 24th of July 6-8pm
Soho Revue Print Studio was established in May 2023 by Soho Revue gallery and printmaker-facilitator James Randell. The Soho Revue programme champions young, emerging artists that embrace and innovate within traditional media, and has supported a network of artists since 2023 through a residency space at ‘Artists House’ and commissioned installations.
The provision of a print studio allows this evolving group to deepen their knowledge of printmaking with expert assistance, or for those more experienced printmakers, to take on more ambitious projects with a spare pair of hands. It has also allowed Soho Revue to reach out and build new relationships. As a space working primarily with young artists, Soho Revue also has a young community of collectors. Whilst being original artworks, as multiples, prints are priced more affordably than other works. Soho Revue Print Studio has been established with the deep and rich history of printmaking in mind, intending to speak in the same language as Goya, Kathe Kollwitz, and Paula Rego, and to give artists the opportunity to handle the enthralling material stuff of print – the grounds, varnishes, inks, and chemicals which produce printmaking’s alchemy.
For many of the artists in this exhibition, this has been their first real experience of printmaking, and has therefore been an opportunity to stretch out and be playful in a new medium, to add to the expressive vocabulary that informs their work. In the first year of the studio, James has been keen to explore a wide range of approaches with artists, to emphasise the huge range of effects that can be wrangled from metal, wood, or linoleum. Printmaking operates at a different pace than other media, often keeping its final form hidden until the very last moment, after several agonising, methodical and patient days. Pulling a print has, therefore, the feeling of a magician’s reveal. In our first annual ‘Print Revue’, we hope to share some of that magic.
