Wings

Nell Nicholas

3rd of July - 20th of July

Private View 3rd of July 6-8pm

Soho Revue is pleased to present ‘Wings’, the first UK solo show of painter Nell Nicholas. Nell is a landscape painter and for her, painting is a way of making sense of things and of collecting things that move her. She is fascinated by things that stop her in her tracks, things that describe the world in a way that words can’t and things that demonstrate the beauty of the mundane. Soho Revue will be displaying a series of Nell’s monumental paintings as well as ceramics and other objects Nell has created.

The instinct to collect, assemble, collage, is a central preoccupation of WINGS, the first solo UK exhibition by Nell Nicholas. Comprised mostly of snapshots of travel, real or imaged, the images layer, merge and proliferate on the canvas, their newfound proximity sometimes evoking unease. Through the process of assemblage and collage, and the resultant visual barrage that is the experience of viewing these works, the collection considers questions of travel and reflects on the discordant position of the tourist. Elizabeth Biship's poem Questions of Travel is called to mind, which also reckons which the blend of wonder and estrangement felt when elsewhere, the impulse to capture through photographs and souvenirs, and the impossibility of faithfully rendering the experience of its aftermath. 'Where should we be today? Have we room for one more folded sunset? Should we have stayed at home and thought of here?'
